This week we will be
looking at the art photography of Lorna Simpson and Adrienne Piper:
Art photographers like
Fosso, Weems, Simpson and Piper (and the following photographers) work
conceptually to ask philosophical questions. It is required that you read
“‘Acting Like a Man’: The Mythic Being and Black Feminism” and “Marianne
Lately—Lorna Simpson and the Cinema of Feminine Illusion” in your photocopied
packet before responding to the works of both of these artists (this week you
will be writing two bibliographies, and next week you will write three, so as
to prepare you to write your proposal for the research project—due Friday October
30 at midnight, so be prepared to spend a little extra time on this course
these coming weeks). If you can, also familiarize yourself with Mohanty’s
argument in “‘Under Western Eyes,’ Revisited”
(also in your photocopied packet). Bibliographies #7 and #8 will be due Monday
Oct 19 at midnight.
I urge you to really think about your research project as
you select and write the following bibliographies. How might you incorporate
what you are learning and the work you’ve already done this semester in this
course into your research project? Also, I want to emphasize that the research
paper can read like any of the articles you have read in this course thus far.
Some authors, if you remember, use “I.” Others choose to focus solely on the
art and concepts and argument at hand. I’ll be asking you which article was
your favorite soon. You might consider using this article as a template for
your own essay… I'll also post the proposal assignment at some point this week, so that you have ample time to begin drafting your proposal.
Bibliographies #7 and #8 will be due Monday Oct 19 at midnight?
