African American Still Photography Annotated #1

This image immediately caught my attention out of Sidibe's collection of photos. This picture appears to be similar to some of his other photos of an outdoor setting that appears as a beach in the background, where the youth hang out at to enjoy life. In this photo there is a young boy and girl, and both of them appear to be unhappy with their stone like faces. They are facing each other in aggressive stances and they both seem to be holding a large rock in one of their hands. Sidibe captures this photo where the two figures appear to be in a throwing motion with the rock held above their head.

In the article it states how Sidibe's photos, "reflects the youth, embraces rock and roll, and rebellion against authority". This quote shows that Sidibe likes to capture young people in the moment living free and doing whatever they please. In this photo it could be a brother and sister, boyfriend and girlfriend, or just two friends. They could be in a fight, but I could not imagine them throwing those rocks at each other, and so they could be involved in a competitive game that involves throwing the rocks for distance or at another object. Sidibe shows how the youth lived a reckless like life-style with the little clothing they appear to be wearing and the action captured in the photo.
