ANDREW HELLER'S ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY #1
Observation:Three men are pictured here in semi formal clothing and two are wearing headgear. All three men have cigarettes in their mouths and although none are overtly smiling, they each poses a slight grin. Additionally, each man is holding an instrument. Two of the instruments are drums while the other appears to be a xylophone type contraption. Everyone in the picture also has a beard and two of the gentleman are wearing predominantly wearing white clothing, while the other is wearing dark clothing. Finally, the man on the far right is holding something that resembles a horn, and the carpet has a tribal diamond pattern.
Inference: It appears that these three decided to represent themselves in a way that is both traditional and semiformal. The instruments seem to reflect their African heritage, while the fancier, but not extravagant, clothes symbolize their rising class status. Additionally, I believe that the cigarettes in their mouths represent a symbol of wealth and success. In many poorer countries, cigarettes represent financial success due to their expensive costs, and it is possible that these men are trying to flaunt a wealthier image through the inclusion of the cigarettes. Their nicely trimmed beards may also be present to demonstrate an image that is both formal and true to their culture.I believe that the rug was chosen with that theme in mind as it is both ornate and distinctively African. Overall, I believe that the photograpther did a good job in creating a photograph that exemplifies their African heritage and one of youthful men of high society.
